In this section, the four academic summaries present the central ideas in four articles about poverty; To Fight Poverty, Invest in Girls by Nancy Gibbs, Food for Thought by Malawi Dedaz, The Birthplace of Obama the Politician by Paul Tough, and Building a Country by Switching on the Lights by Bryan Walsh. While all four articles were helpful beginning to understand the major problems lead to poverty, Gibbs, Tough and Walsh emphasize even more the political, social and economy issues caused poverty. For instance:
“There's one obstacle to development that has too often been forgotten, a blind spot that does more than almost anything to keep the poor poor: they don't have electric power” –Bryan Walsh.
We started to understand and creatively analyze the deep meaning and factors that caused poverty, along with developing our cognitive, comprehensive and critical skills. As we found that, if each society and government in the world collaborated together hand to hand to solve poverty or even reduce its effects, the world poverty rate will be significantly reduced.
In the process of writing these summaries, we learn to read the articles many times to enhance our comprehensive, to ask questions and “silently” argue with the author’s ideas to explore hidden meanings and thoughts which build our ability to creatively, critically and carefully read others’ thoughts, to understand the major concepts of poverty.
